Breakfast Like A King!
‘All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast.’
There’s nothing better than a good hearty breakfast to set you on the path to a day of adventures. Fried breakfast, cereal, toast and porridge this month, with the frost on the ground and a nip in the air, I’m all for the virtues of a warm breakfast and so I’m telling the tale of ‘The Magic Porridge Pot’.
Collected by the Grimm brothers and known to them at ‘Sweet Porridge,’ there are many different versions of this well loved tale, from all around the world. In the German version of the story, a mother and her daughter are starving until they are gifted a magic porridge pot. The pot, when instructed, will cook the most delicious sweet porridge and saves them from their hunger. You can listen to my telling of the story in the video below and find out what happens when the magic words to stop the pot cooking, are forgotten.
There are many magical food tales, stories of magic table cloths that produce beautiful feasts when spread out, stories of millstones that produce endless salt and of course, stones that make delicious soup. These are often born from hard times, when people did not have so much food and would often be extremely hungry, if not starving during the winter.
We live in modern times when food should be easier to come by, but not always for everyone, so as well as a craft activity for this month (included in the video), I’m suggesting that we all try and make a donation to the local food bank, to help those that do not have magic porridge pots. Of course there are also our fur and feathered friends outside too, so why not make a tasty treat for them as suggested by Clare here.
I hope you enjoy the story, until next month, toodle pip!
